Artist Statement & Biography

A life-long fascination with the varied characteristics of water and light and our relationship with the natural environment imbue my paintings, photomontage, printmaking, videos and installations. I consider all my artworks to be in the genre of landscape, one medium informing the other.

Inspirations draw from observations of changing river shores and forest pathways around my west-Ottawa home, and of melting glaciers in the High Arctic during an artist residency expedition documenting climate warming impact.

Semi abstract and figurative paintings, photomontage and printmaking evoke the ecological fragility of our relationship within the natural environment.  Composition and materials contribute to meaning and open-ended spaces for visitor resonance and interpretation.

The Cyanotype Photograph series, c. 2024, is inspired by my high arctic tall ship artist expedition to photo document the impacts of climate warming in the fjords of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. I was introduced to Cyanotype printing during the spring solstice in 2019 on a voyage with 29 other interdisciplinary artists. Cyanotype printing is a 19th century photography development process that uses ultraviolet light on light sensitized surfaces.

Paintings and photomontage giclee prints are in private and public collections in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver, and internationally. The City of Ottawa Art Collection recently installed my watercolour installation, Trees Interrupted, in their Municipal Elections Office.

Recognitions include many juried solo and group exhibitions, Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance awards and International Artist Residencies.

A recipient of the St. Lawrence College Fine Arts Diploma I was their representative nominee for the Ontario Premiers Award in Creative Arts. In addition, the Ontario Arts Council and Ontario Arts Foundation nomination for the K.M. Hunter Award for my art contribution to contemporary art discourse. Painting recognitions include the Art Tour International Top 60 Contemporary Artist Award presented at the Museum of Art and Design New York City.

Formal arts training includes the Masters in Environmental Studies - York University, Bachelor of Fine Arts – University of Ottawa, Bachelor of Arts Sociology and Architecture, and post graduate studies in Sociology of Culture and History at Carleton University.
